Ennalum anbe anbe thaan vaazhkaye..

A movie sans commercial elements has only little chance to hit at the box-office unless the screenplay becomes the hero. 'Kannum Kannum' movie(2007), is a personal favorite. I am not sure whether it did well at the Cinemas but its story and narration were beautiful. This song 'Anbe anbe thaan vaazhkaye' has neat wordses in sync with the storyline and an attractive picturing (backdrop is the amazing Kutralam in many scenes). Some favorite lines ' Annai annai illai endru enn adimanam azhudhadhu undu, ennai vidu ilaya pengal enn annai enna aanadhu enna'. ' Irudhayam sirakadithu enn vaazhvil idhu varai paarthadu ilai, enn naalum iruttukul vaazhndu vandhen, enn vaanam thekku pakum vidiya kanden' .' Enn vaazhvil izhandhadhai adainthu vitten, kai maarai en idhaythai virundhu vaithen'. Vairamuthu spinning love with lines. And ya watch the movie if you haven't. A sincere direction by G.Marimuthu.

Hey.. I have not been posting a lot on favorite songs/songsters/composers these days. To me a day without some music is a day incomplete. Just thought of these three songs which I have been listening to repeatedly for the past few weeks. I have been performing them with my heart inside out on my PG's terrace where my mobile becomes the mike and the vast night sky, the audience:)  

1. Mere chehre ki dho nishaaniyaan - God, Rahman... You must have got up directly from your prayers and composed this one:) It's got a divine touch end-to-end. More often than not you come up with an ethereal melody like this that mizzles on one's heart leaving it fresh ... Halki si baarish huyi sooki zindagi par...(A light shower on my barren life) ... Sonu Nigam pulls it off really well( If it was sung by another proficient singer also I would have liked it, might be. But Sonu Nigam brings in the emotion in those lines (which I think will be more evident after the release of the film) to the fullest , especially I thought this line of the pallavi... ' Is phone ke saas par, meri awaaz bhar, mujhpe hasthi hain khamoshiyaannnnnnnnnn' and also all those endings, meherbaniyaann/badhgumaniyaann/nishaniyaann. And Abbas Tyrewala, I just can't wait for the release of your  movie. And what a songster you are!! Janne tu remains to top my playlist even today, equally for the lyrics and music. Jhoota hi sahi album is also unfolding before me in the same way. Been listening to only 'Cry Cry' and 'Dho nishanniyaan' though, can't get enough of this one itself...:)

2. Pookal pookum tharunam aaruyir paarthadu yaarum ilaye - I can just write the lyrics of this song at a stretch. Na. Muthukumar pens beautifully , here are some of the best wordses of recent times in the lines of first love. ' Enna uravu idhu edhuvum puriyavilai endra pothum idhu neeludhe (What relationship is this, not able to understand it but still I am hanging on to)...Yaar endru ariyaamal, peyar kuda theriyamal ivan odu oru sondhum uruvaanadhe(Haven't known him, but still a nameless relationship is building its way)... Yen endru ketkaamal, valithaalum nirkamal ivan pogum vazhi engum manam pogudhe(Without asking why's, without stopping even if it hurts, my heart is going his way)...' Harini, where were you this long.? Your voice hasn't changed even a shade though. Mesmerizing like always. Roop Kumar Rathod, what a singer! When he sings 'Poonthalure...'  it touches all chords of my heart. Some singers have a niche with love songs, Rathod is one such. Pookal pookum is as beautiful as his Khamosh raath(an all time fav number). G.V. Prakash has composed it really well. Those Andrea's english verses and the Thaana thom thanana...thaana thom thanana... are really sweet. 

3. Maavin chottile manam ulla maduramai, manadharil kulirunn yen baalyam(the smell and sweetness of the mango of childhood days )- A beautiful melody that brings in nostalgia for a keralite especially. The first time I heard this song was on TV,  Swetha Mohan sang it for some Singapore Asianet show . Me and mom were enjoying each line of it. It was sprinkled with freshness throughout. Mom's eyes lightened up as she articulated incidents of her childhood days relating to the lines in this number. It's so beautifully written and so well sung by Sweta(singer Sujathas daughter). It's composed by M.G.Sreekumar(singer turned composer). 'Niramaarna sandhya maanju, mazhai ulla raathri poyi... innum marayatha mazha orrma yen balyam'.(The colorful evenings have shaded out, the rainy nights are all gone, just those showery memories of my childhood are left behind).

Idhu sogam aanaalum, oru sugam...

It's been long I wrote something in my page. Kind of bored to pen today also. But couldn't stop writing down the lines I am listening to now and which I have been humming for more than a week now. Maalai neram, mazhai thurram kaalam enn jennalin orrum nitkiren from Aayirathil Oruvan. Awe-struck actually. I heard from my friend that Selvaraghavan has himself penned the lyrics. I have heard songs which are full of life. This song is a step above that, should I say full of soul? Down the memory lane there are lots of moments we treasure, and there are equal moments we want to forget. Somebody has told, 'Past doesn't exist, it's just in memories and to think otherwise is to invite a mess'. Yaa it might be true, but director Selva, time and again comes with creations romancing the past. The key factor about Selva's certain songs are that they are just taken from the memory lane and without any adulteration presented. Who can forget Ninaithu ninaithu paarthen or Oru nallil vaazhkai.? It's so much real, it is so much of soul, it is so much of YOU. For all those non-fictional people listening to Maalai neram in Andrea's awesome voice and dropping a tear or two on your pillow covers... It's ok, you can move on... you must be lucky to have felt it:) Un karam korkayil, ninnaivu orr aayiram, Numm irru karam pirrigayil, ninnaivu nooru aayiram. Kadhalil vizhindu idhayam, meezhka mudiyadhadha Kanavil thulaindha nijangal, meendum thirumbadhadha. Oru kaalayil nee illai, thedavum manam varavillai, Pirindhadhum, purindhadhu, naan ennai izhandhen enna... Idhu sogam aanal oru sugam, nenjin ulle parravidum, Naam paazhagiya kaalam paravasam,anbe...Idham tharume... Tamil literature is beautiful, wish I could study to read and write properly. :)

The K factor!

Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham is a movie which I haven't written into a DVD. I like to watch this movie once in a year and relish it totally. And whenever I watch it there is one particular scene I look for. The scene where Roshan (Hrithik) enters Rahul's(Sharukh) house. Roshan with his eyes full on seeing his brother. (I like when boys cry, coz they rarely do:)Hrithik and Sharukh have acted it out brilliantly. And ofcourse Karan Johar's hang on relationship movies. I think this is his best. And the sad version of the title song played in the background. There is this yearning in the voice of the singer. Too good. 'Jism tu, jaan mai, tera pehchaan mai. Milke bhi na mile ye hai kaisa bharam. Ye hai tere karam, kabhi khushi kabhi gham'. Enjoy the scene.

This goes to my Dad

When someone pens the  innermost feelings esp that of a relationship, thats exactly when you appreciate the power of literature. A song from a malyalam movie 'Satyam Sivam Sundaram'. A dedication to the memories of my Dad. I am sure it will be lost in translation. But I have come to know this, the songs with the most touching lyrics can't be translated. Languages here become incompatible.

Two songs of IllayaRaja sir which moves me literally to another world. 'Kalai Thendral Padi Varum' from Uyarntha Ullam. Sung by P.Sussela. Mannnnn....hers is the kind of voice which will stay forever. Not many songs with lines on nature I have heard. Most of the time, I start my day listening to this wonderful song. It makes you forget every woes and cherish the sublime beauty of nature and all it's forms. You will definitely give a look at the flowers in your garden, the sky with a sense of gratification.

The Pen's Might

Two songs that touched on me recently. 'Vaa Vaa En Devadhaye' from Abhiyum Naanum. My expectations from this movie was really high. Though it was good cinema, in person I thought it could have been far better. This isn't all that happens in a Father and Daughter relationship. What I felt was 'Emotions inside can't be pictured with a camera and how much ever real you try to portray it, it gets fancied'. But definitely Radha Mohan's move to make such movies is commendable. This song 'Vaa Vaa En Devadhaye' reminds me of my Dad. He was akin to the character Prakash Raj depicts. Wordses by 'Vairamuthu'. For a father to whom his daughter is almost everything. A favorite line is the one in the last charanam 'Pen Pillai Thaniyarai Pugandhadhile,Oru Pirivukku Othigayai Paarthu Konden'. The very thought of getting separated from his daughter is a pang for the father. The lines bear upon for a long while even after listening to the song. Sung by 'Madhu Balakrishnan', his voice is very soothing.

Another song that affected me was 'Pichaipathiram Endhi Vandhen' from 'Naan Kadavul'. I never knew IllayaRaja sir can pen. This song was really haunting for few days. Even now I haven't gathered courage to watch this movie. The inner meaning in lots of lines gets you thinking. The anguish, the cry within, it's a call to the creator. Pichaipathiram in the song refers to the 'body' the beggar carries along. I got to hear such sharp-eyed lyrics after a long time. Sung really well by 'Madhu Balakrishnan'.

It's been a really long wait for the release of Gautham's 'Vaaranam Aayiram'. So many grapevines about the story. Some say it's Russian film 'Character' and many others it's Tom hanks 'Forrest Gump'. Now all this, given that Gautham takes lots of inspiration from Hollywood flicks. Whatever, I wish the film releases soon... Heard the music tracks. Good ones. The melodies ' Nenjukul Peidhidum' and 'Mundhinam Parthene' will stay for long. Naresh Iyer's voice in 'Mundhinam' is damn romantic, better than in Munbe Va. I can't review about the tunes but ya the lyrics by 'Thamarai' is in a word 'outstanding'. I say that coz she is this lyricist who gives so much importance to 'Tamizh literature'...Writing simple lines would have been an easy job, but I guess she really wished to give people a different treat. I suppose 'Nenjukul' is a song wherein she has used so many adjectives to refer to a beautiful girl and all of that in a guys perspective. When I heard 'Karkha Karkha' from Vettaiyadu Villayadu I thought Thamarai was really good and now Nenjukul makes me feel she is brilliant. Na na...I haven't been able to comprehend the song fully even after so many hearings. The specialty in the song is the rhyming words... Watch out for the different 'ai' 's that goes so well with the rhythm of the song... Maamazhai(heavy rain)... Thaamarai(Lotus)... Vaanilai (weather)... Pizhai(fault)... Perrallai(huge wave)... Thaaraghai(lady)... Kaarighai(beauty)... Kaanchanai ( lady)... Anthaadi(Everything, mudhalum mudivum). I ended up reading my first ever thamizh short story of Pudumaipittan while searching for what does 'Kaanchanai' mean. As per the story Kaanchanai is this really beautiful daughter of the King of Kasi. Intense Google search took me to Sanskrit pages, so much of related stuff with 'Thiruvaimozhi' , 'Aandal Kalyanam' et all:)

'Kavidhayin suvvai, artham puriyum varrai...' (The taste of poetry is only till you have got the picture of it..)So I stopped my search there. Poetry is always fun. You can interpret it the way you want it to be. I am presently relishing this Harris+Thamarai+Hariharan's 'Nenjukul Peidhidum Maamazhai'...Totally drenched!

'Kadhal ennum saabam thandha devadhaye, kaannalaamo raagam nindru povadhaye...' This song 'Oru mani adithal' has followed me for years or rather the other way. I can't point out what I like about this song... the lyrics or the fact that it was a rarity to hear this number. I still remember once when returning from collg, this song was played in some shop in loudspeaker and I was lingering before the shop wanting to listen to it fully and another day got to enjoy the full number in FM played in the auto I was travelling. There was this another song, 'goat song' as I used to call it. Rarely in FM or in some music channel I get to hear it. I never knew which film or who was the composer even. But it always sounded catchy. I started googling with just some middle lines in the search tab since I wasn't sure of the starting word even. Found it was 'Oyilaa Padum paatila' from SeevalpperiPandi. It was an Illayaraja song. Happy to have both the songs in my system now:-) Not just that, years back, guess during school days I remember watching a Karthik-Gowthami-Suhasini movie. It was a quite a good flick. And there was this one song picturing between Karthik and a little girl, a dad-daughter one which was like really touching. An unwitting subject to search on. But sometimes it's like that... You will remember a pani puri or an icecream shop that's quite far away from your place and you would have eaten there just once... But you would do just about anything to get there. Ever been in thos shoes? Now this was a search for a video song... Knowing nothing but the actors it was hard to look for. I had to type all that I knew about the movie, wishing atleast some of the keywords in the search tab would lead me to relevant pages. Gowthami's wikipedia and from there went on to find the movie where she costarred with Karthik and then from the movie name to the song. Atlast I was glad to find someone had uploaded the video in youtube. Dat was quite a rare number sung by Mano composed by Illayaraja sir again. 'Naan vaazndhadhu konjam andha vaasathil vandhudhitthu uyiril kalandhaai enn uyire... ' It was 'Endhan vaazhkayin artham solla' song from Chinna Kannama. The little gal was Baby Shaamili. I just didn't remember that while searching. It had this heart-warming lyrics. Stupid na but I was like so happy. Pleasure of finding something long lost. Must be that.

I was not keeping track of tamil album releases. I listened to this song day before in my bro's PSP.... it's such a sweet number. Haricharan strikes again. I loved his voice in Sariya idhu Thavara from Kallori . It is is sugar-coated I believe. Vow, good one man! Aazhiyile is a bit song from dhaam dhoom composed by Harris and the lyrics is by Muthukumar. After Anbe Anbe koladhe from jeans, I guess this is that tamil song that beautifies beauty so well.

Song + Philosophy = Songsophy:):) Hey just wanted to mention 4 songs with some comforting, great and yaa philosophical lyrics. B4 I could tag these numbers philosophical, I wanted to know what is the actual meaning of philosophical coz I m using it then and there....LOL. Philosophical- meeting trouble with level-headed detachment. Yaa then fine the songs I have chosen definitely falls under this genre. Not exploring much of the lyrics except for one song ( don't worry no translation...if any one wants to know the translation you can surely comment)

1. 'Manithan Enbavan Deivam Agalam' from Sumaithangi. I should say this song brings in such a feeling, 'like if there was an older version to Anbe Sivam'. Brilliantly written by Kannadhasan. ' thunindhu vittal thalayil endha sumayum thaangalaam...ghunam, ghunam adha kovil aagalam'.

2. ' Ovoru Pookalame' from Autograph. This song need no intro. The prayer song in some school, that says it all. The thirst to win besides setbacks, the two verses covers life's darker shades the best way. Kudos to P.a Vijay.Few lines: ' Kaala pokill kayam yellam marandhu pogum mayangal... Oru kanavu kandaal, adhai dhinam muyandraal oru naalil nijam agum... Oru mudivu eduthal, adhul thelivu irundhaal andha vanam vasam aagum'

3. ' Yaai Re Yaai Re' from Rangeela. It is a zippy song. The music definitely outshines the lyrics. But there are some discerning lines in this song by Mehboob. 'Taang hain ji uspar, dhuniya mai he rehkar, dhuniya mai jeene ki andaaz ko naa jaane. maate ya haathon pe , chaand yaa taaron pe, kismat ko dhoonden par kudh pe kya hain na jaane...'

4. The fourth and the final song, 'Oru Naalil' from Pudhupettai. Wonderfully composed and sung by Yuvan and sharp-sighted lyrics by Na.Muthukumar. The lines are so simple. It rips apart life. What is living all about...? I haven't come across any other beautiful song that explore life like this one. It's my 10 on 10 number. If you haven't listened to this song, do download. The music and lyrics both are outstanding. It's your life, just yours. We are each of us, alone!!

Aayitha Ezhuthu - Part1

Long is the list of my favorite movies. And topping the list would be surely Manirathnam's movies. I recently found out my best-loved movie from the listing. AAYITHA EZHUTHU(2004). Due to umpteen reasons. The concludes can't be wrapped up in a single post. So yaa in parts. Three playscripts made into a single flick. But hey it's difficult for me to put my dearie into just 3 posts, I am in the thought of sharing all those characters, songs, lyrics, picturing and the nuances, niceties, insights...anything and everything. First part would be definitely one particular song(I m kinda obsessed to all numbers in the movie). This is the 'GREEN PART'. For those who have watched the movie, will definitely know about the shades orange, green and blue. Green is the vibrant and my personal favorite. It solely belongs to Michael Vasanth( Surya). The urge of an individual to change politics by not just cerebrating and blaming but my making an entry. 'Youngsters in Politics', if there is any song that could be played in the background it would be definitely 'Jana Gana Mana', an ideological one. Stupefying lyrics by Vairamuthu(in our jargon, 'room pottu yosiparo??:), a blend in the vocals, ARR and Karthik(as usual great modulation by our guru), amazing cinematography by Ravi.K.Chandran(India in her villages!!) and vibrating music by Rahman( the stroll from the slow to the fast pace, the chorus) Popularly known as the YUVA (hindi version) song. Thodi Si Fardha - A tinge of philosophy!!!

I have a strong liking for old hindi songs, R.D. Burman, Kishore Kumar, Mukesh, Mohamed Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle. I can't recognize them in a crowd, neither am I cognizant about the movies, but then many of their songs have made my day. I have a collection of about 150 songs. Thanks to Bro, and the mighty Google for helping me filter from a galore of old flicks. Talking about my favorite R.D. Burman I can start from his early 1970's Sholay 'Mehbooba Mehbooba' to his last album in 1994 ' 1942 Love Story' (How to forget the soothing 'Ek Ladki Ko Dekho Tho Jana Sanam') Now dats nearly 3 decades!! Equally talented were the singers in the former generation. Kishore Kumar is my favorite. There are lots of numbers that I just can't forget, that which comes to my mind in no time is 'Dil Kya Kare, Jab Kissise Kissiko Pyaar Ho Jaaye' and ' Rim Jim Ghire Sawan'. Kishore is known for his rocking and lively voice. Singing with so much ease is indeed a blessing. My personal favs are 'Neele Neele Ambar Par' and the other is a quite philosophical 'Jeevan Ke Din' from the movie 'Bade Dilwale'. I don't want to translate and spoil this brilliant song. It's about the fact ' Life gives you pain, but it also gives you the medicines so just unwind and live this present moment which is shining like a star and melting like a snowflake' Hakuna Matata(No worries dear!!!)

Running Around The Trees ~~ Wat's Your Pick?

Ah, what a morning it was today. Around 7.20 in my college bus, its drizzling out, if I had got a seat near the window I would have been really happy writing names, fav songs on the wet window (crazy work) Now in our collg we aren't allowed to take gadgets( I don't mind leaving my cell phone, but my MP3). Luckily Jinu had brought hers, (one teacher sitting in the back and the other to my side, nothing doing, arre cmon we r final yrs, smthing inside told me 'break the rules') K chalo thn we decided to listen. Now Jinu had her playlist loaded with her favs. This MP3 n iPod is simply great technology I would say, all those nuances in music and the lyrics can be heard so distinctly. It's foliage all the way from our stop to collg. Closed my eyes and literally went to a different world( Yeah thr were trees...lol) 'Engeyo un mugam naan partha nyabagham , Epotho unudan naan vazntha nyabaham...' dats the classic voice of Bombay Jayshree. It's uyire en uyire song from Thotti Jaya. Harris would have blended the voices of both Anuradha Sriram and Bombay Jayashree really well. Now that made a great start. I chose to stay in the same world, its still drizzling. I started thinking of love songs, ok let me see how much I will be able to envisage in a matter of 30 mins. Being a Rahman freak most of them I could think of were his compositions. The others were well known romantic hits, most of which I love for its lyrics than its music.

6. You can't forget Yuvan for sure when it comes to romance or should I say Selvaraghavan. 7. Back to Illayaraja. Some songs are so well composed and so commonly sung that you just can't forget them. ' Ethetho ennam valarthein, un kayil ennai koduthein...' Punnagai Mannan, ' Neeyum nayagan kadhal padagan, anbil odi inbum kodi naalum kannalam...' Kathal Oviyum from Alaigal Oyvathilai. 'Kadal vaanam kuda niram maara kudum, manam konda paasum thadam maaridadhu...' Poove Sempoove. N yaa 'Unai enni naane ullam vaadi ponnein, kaani ponnu dhaane yen maamane...:) Ooru Sanam from Mella Thirandhadhu Kadhavu.

8. There were 2 new favs too. 'Kadaluku mel oru mazhai thuli vandhu vizhndhadhe, uppu enna maruma, illay muth enna maruma...?' Sariya Idhu Thavara from Kallori. ' Kai vidum oru kudayay pol, mazhai katrodu dhaan naanum parandhein...'Mudhal mazhai from Bheema.

I was almost blushing:) There were many more songs I remembered in that romantic climate. Can't recollect now. When I opened my eyes, the bus was nearing college. The journey was awesome to the say the least. Sometimes I feel how much I love solitude, traveling. Really I do. Then I was asking myself ' So Rums you too are thinking of running around trees?' Then there came another song to my mind which told me, if you run now, you will surely fall. To love someone and to be loved in return, I felt the person should have inspired you and you too should have in return. In simple words, be proud of each other.

The song is 'Tum Se Hi' from Jab We Met. How the gal leaves an inspiration on the guy, how things change in his life after her coming. Yaa, this is what it gotta be...'intense courtship'. No matter for how many years, its worth waiting for one such.

Never Let Anything Get The Better Of You!!!

Your laziness, emotions, weaknesses, run-ins with friends, silly disputes with parents, illness. Inadvertently many of us let these factors 'win over us'. Laziness is growing up with me I feel. Starting from 'not reading the daily' in the morning to ' not brushing before I go to bed' in the night. I don't even try to keep this slothfulness away. See there is difference between 'thinking' and 'trying'. If you are just gonna think of doing something fruitful, you will remain cerebrating. But give trying a shot, then you can feel the real change. I chose to write on this today, coz I feel there are many like me out there going through the same. We tend to give importance to all that non-significant matters and at the end of the day feel feckless. Misunderstandings with friends, arguments with parents, we carry all this in our head. Feeling hurt and at the same time trying to defend ourselves. In the midst of all these where will we find time for our dreams. I am penning this now coz past two days I did absolutely nothing, just feeling depressed. The reasons if now I think are so sappy. One was a fight with my mom and the other with one of my friends. I just let it win over me. Felt so foolish at the end of it. Hence just thought are there people like me, who rather than doing something productive are busy occupying themselves with trivial matters, which are nothing but just 'seemingly monumental and momentary'. Just remember, nothing can get bigger than you, so chuck up all woes and live for your dreams alone.

Kadhalika Neramillai~~~My CT

'Valibathil Kadhalika, Jadhakathil Vazhiyum Illai', one of my all time favorite song from the blockbuster movie ' Kadhalikka Neramillai' of 1964 starring Muthuraman, Kanchana , music by the amazing duo 'Viswanathan-Ramamurthy' and songs brilliantly written by 'Kannadasan'. A Star Vijay TV serial is being screened under the same name . Of late what is being played in loops in my playlist is ' Ennai Thedi Kadhal Endra Vaarthai Anupu', the title track of the serial. I hate watching soaps, but this song was refreshing. Don't talk about the story of the serial, first few episodes I managed sitting and then lost every bit of my patience. The half an hour is meant to take a trip to the vantage locations of Singapore(heard the shooting is shifted to Chennai now) and then the silly fights between the lead pairs Shakthi(Prajin) & Divya(Chandra Lakshmanan). Prajin was a hot favorite of Sun Music TV viewers. Btw I heard Prajin has got married to Sandra(who was a VJ in Kiran Music Channel). The love marriage wasn't publicized coz they felt it would affect the TRP of the serial:)( Oh, I m sorry if I had broken the hearts of any die-hard female Prajin fans)

Now let me come to the point. I am doing service currently, Isn't setting caller tunes, a service?? It was my foolishness actually. My best friend loves the title track of this serial . It was my attempt to make her happy. But never knew it would cost me some 60 Rs. It is like this, 30Rs for setting CT, 15 Rs for song selection and couple of SMS of 3 Rs. Soon I will run out of balance:( You see my friends are soooooo loving, they send me an SMS ' I will call you now, don't bother to lift the call ' , yesterday my cell went on ringing for 1 hour continuously. Friends happy, me too happy. Hope I don't forget to cancel the service after a month time.

This song is composed by 'Vijay Antony' and I heard it is sung by his wife. The lyrics are simple and beautiful. The beats are too good. It makes a lovely song.
